CHILDREN are being invited to enjoy breakfast with Santa and help disabled youngsters become more independent at the same time.

Having Father Christmas read a story, enjoying a delicious breakfast and receiving a present are what children can look forward to at the event at Stainton and Streatlam Village Hall on Saturday, December 2.

The breakfast is being organised by hall member Amanda Pettitt with the intention of raising cash for Whizz Kids, a charity that provides electric wheelchairs for children with disabilities.

She said: “My niece Ruby, who is 12, has central core disease. She has a wheelchair because she has mobility problems in her legs. She walks but she can’t walk too far.

“Now that she is older, her family applied to the NHS for an electric wheelchair but they were unsuccessful.”

Later Ruby’s family learned about Whizz Kids and made a successful application for help.

Ms Pettitt said: “It has made such a difference to her life. As a family we went for a walk along the seafront (at Cleethorpes). Normally we can’t do that, we would be pushing her. She loves the fact she now has her independence.

“So, I thought I want to do something for them.”

The charity has already provided life-changing wheelchairs to 10,000 youngsters but estimates there are about 75,000 more who need help.

A charity spokesperson said: “Our wheelchair clinics make sure you get the right equipment fitted to your individual needs. From manual wheelchairs to powered options, trikes, buggies and more – we aim to keep you mobile and moving as you grow.”

The Breakfast With Santa fun begins at 10am and tickets cost £10 per child. Refreshments will also be on sale for other family members.

There will also be crafts and activities for children to enjoy.

Tickets need to be booked in advance through Ms Pettitt on 07738 214605.
