ALMOST three dozen people collected 67 bags of rubbish in Evenwood following a village appeal.

People and groups bandied together in a safe way for a spontaneous litter pick after resident Ray Swainston highlighted the problem on social media.

Brian Carter, of Evenwood and District History Society, said: “Due to the current Covid restrictions taking part was through individual choice and all participants were told to proceed as individuals or family and support bubble groups and to observe current guidelines.”

John Bogle, manager of the Randolph Community Centre, arranged for equipment to be available for anyone who wanted to join in the event.

“About 30 to 35 adults and children turned up at various times and collectively managed to gather 67 bags of rubbish from the streets and verges of approach roads to the communities,” said Mr Carter.

He added that Mr Swainston, who had made the call on the village’s Facebook history group page, hoped the litter pick would become a monthly community event when Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

Mr Carter said: “The whole event has definitely raised the feel-good factor and the hope is that future events will be more social than current restrictions allow.”
