Village carnivals set to return… but it’s no-go for Barney Meet

BACK ON: The Hobson family at Eggleston Carnival in 2018

CARNIVALS in Mickleton and Eggleston are to go ahead this year after being abandoned last year because of coronavirus.
Organisers say the events will take place a month later than normal, in anticipation of restrictions being eased further. Mickleton Carnival, which would normally take place on the first Saturday of June, is now set for Saturday, July 3, and will be a slightly different format with the inclusion of some new events.
David Hutchinson, of Mickleton Village Hall, said: “We have Barnard Castle Brass Band which is new to us and we will have a big marquee on the field. There will be the usual magician and Punch and Judy, and teas will be in the hall.
“We will probably still do the kiddies races.
“We have got to do something just to try to entice people back out.”
Terry and Barbara Wilson from the village are hoping more people will get involved in giving ideas about what events and activities people would like to see at the carnival. A small group has been arranged to meet at the village hall on Friday, May 7, to discuss ideas.
Anyone with ideas can email [email protected].
Mr Hutchinson also confirmed that Eggleston Carnival is to take place a week after the Mickleton event, on Saturday, July 10.
He said: “It will be on the green as usual and we will probably look at doing teas in the hall.”
Other activities are yet to be finalised, he said.

THIS year’s Barnard Castle Meet parade has been called off due to Covid-19.
A spokesperson for the committee said: “We think it’s the sensible option in the current circumstances. The organisation takes months due to health and safety requirements, road closures etc. We will be working on next year though to make it the best come back.”
An official announcement has yet to be made over whether the fun fair will still be held in the council carpark near Morrisons.
