CANCER Research campaigners aim to “Turn Barney Pink” for a week next month to raise awareness of the disease.
The Teesdale branch of Cancer Research UK hopes to win support from businesses by dressing their windows in pink and for residents to decorate their doors with pink ribbons.
The campaign will run from Saturday, October 8, to Saturday, October 15, and also aims to raise cash for the charity.
Pam Ashmore, of the Teesdale branch, said it is hoped to make it an annual event in Barnard Castle. She added: “We proudly want to show our support in the fight against cancer and would like to invite businesses, organisations and individuals to join us during that week.
“Why not turn your shop, business, car, van, window pink for a week and join us to remember loved ones and celebrate the impact of research?”
In support of the campaign florist Sarah Meeson is creating pink ribbons which, for a recommended donation of £2.50, can be used by residents to decorate the front of their homes.
The ribbons will be available from Ms Meeson’s shop in Galgate, or from cancer fundraiser Sue Birdsall, from Hair Studio. For a minimum donation of £5 shopkeepers will receive a small banner, collection box and a poster acknowledging their support for the campaign.
The initiative has won support from Teesdale Action Partnership (TAP) which has given £300 towards the cause through the neighbourhood budgets of Cllr Richard Bell, Cllr Ted Henderson, Cllr James Rowlandson and Cllr George Richardson.
The Cancer Research UK fundraising manager for the North East, Jan Leafe, said: “This year, Cancer Research UK celebrate its 20th birthday and the Teesdale group would love you to support them to Turn Barney Pink and join them in helping to keep families together longer.
“Fundraising is optional and if you need some inspiration of how to get involved please let us know.”
Events are also being staged during the Turn Barney Pink week, including a Bongo Bingo at the workingman’s club on Saturday, October 8, bingo at the cricket club on Wednesday, October 12, and Pam’s Pink Day, also at the cricket club on Thursday, October 13.
