BARNARD CASTLE METHODIST CHURCH
A THREE-day arts and craft festival was held as part of celebrations to mark 125 years since the church was first opened in 1894.
This beautiful building was enhanced by some wonderful art and craft work produced by members of the church. Part of the exhibition also included a history of Methodism in Barnard Castle, photographs of marriages held in the church and photographs of past events that the church has been involved in within the community.
On the first day, Revd Bev Hollings, superintendent presbyter of Barnard Castle and Teesdale Circuit, welcomed everyone to the festival, and invited mayor Cllr John Blissett to open the event.
Isabel and Katie, students from Teesdale School, who were accompanied on the piano by Stephen Bowman-Jones, impressed all with their beautiful voices when they performed a selection of songs.
The afternoon’s performance was provided by Barnard Castle School – three very talented saxophonists from year nine each played a piece with Mr Donnelly co-ordinating the backing tracks and the Prep School choir of 20, accompanied by Dr Harrison on the piano, sang a number of songs.
The performances were excellent and were enjoyed by all. The performances during the day celebrated the wonderful talents of the younger people in our community.
On the Saturday, there was again a full programme of performances beginning in the morning with the Community Band, led by Annette Butters, who set toes tapping with their selection of music. This was followed in the afternoon with Elizabeth Oliver giving a short talk on lace making followed by a demonstration of her beautiful work.
Elizabeth Conran gave a very informative and enjoyable talk about George Brown, a missionary in Papua New Guinea whose memorial plaque is displayed in the church.
Josie Pollard, who is the organist in the church, concluded with a beautiful piano recital.
During the day Heather Coustick co-ordinated an “All Age Children’s Workshop” . Using tissue paper and lots of glue, children young and old produced a colourful picture of the ruins of Barnard Castle.
Sunday worship was led by Revd Hollings and the service celebrated the gifts and talents of everyone and also of Pentecost, the gift of the Holy Ghost.
During the service, junior church children Lucy and Danny played the piano. The Festival concluded at 4 pm on the Sunday.
This was never intended to be a fundraising event, it was an occasion to celebrate the life of the church. However, despite the inclement weather, during the weekend a good number of people came to see the exhibition and the performances and very generously gave donations, which will be shared between TODYS (Teesdale Opportunities for Disabled Youngsters) and church funds.. Thanks to all who contributed in any way.
