Spinning plates, amazing juggling and acrobatics

IN A SPIN: William McFarlane

EXPONENTS of juggling and circus skills travelled from far and wide to take part in a weekend of activities in Barnard Castle.

Durham City Jugglers arranged its annual convention in the town for the fourth year.

As well as demonstrations and workshops held at Teesdale Leisure Centre, a live show was staged at Glaxo Sports and Social Club.

Taking part in the activities this year were youngsters from the 1st Middleton-in-Teesdale Cubs.

Vicky Mackley, from Durham City Jugglers, said it was the biggest event in the club’s calendar.

“We have a lot of people coming from Newcastle and Durham but also from much further afield.”

She said the convention had been held annually for more than 25 years.

“We have got jugglers and circus folk who take part, but we like to get the locals to have a go.

“Juggling and circus skills are very good for the development of children

and good for keep fit in adults.”

In addition to traditional juggling, there was unicycling, hoola-hoops, trapeze and rope skills on show along with acrobatics.

Ms Mackley confirmed the convention would return to Barnard Castle next year.

“People are getting used to us coming back. Barnard Castle is a good place to be – easy going and safe.”
