Ramshaw pupils learn rifle drill to mark centenary of war’s end

SALUTE: Pupils Rose Mellor

A GROUP of dale primary school pupils are learning a rifle drill to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Armed with rifles fashioned by their former caretaker and master carpenter Peter Marshall, Ramshaw Primary School pupils will form part of Evenwood’s Remembrance Day commemoration later this year. The school received £100 from the village’s parish council to help cover the cost of the rifles. Headteacher Dominic Brown said the squad of six children have already started practising their drills.

As part of the commemoration the children are being asked to think about the impact of war.

Mr Brown said: “We want to pay tribute to the fallen, but also to consider these days there are better ways than picking up a rifle.”

On Remembrance Day each child will represent a villager who died during the war.
