A POPPY wave with more than 2,700 knitted flowers has been hung from the side of Barnard Castle Town Council’s offices to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armistice.
Keen knitter Pauline Harrison came up with the idea to create the poppy wave and put out an appeal for other keen crafters to help.
Women from the Friday Club, a crafting group, who meet every Friday at Woodleigh helped out, making hundreds of knitted and crocheted flowers.
Mrs Harrison said: “I put out messages on social media and the response was great.
“There are so many people who have I’ve had bags of poppies handed in from people from all over and I just want to thank them all for taking part.”
Each of the poppies was then attached to two nets. While Mrs Harrison painstakingly put them on one, prisoners at Deerbolt Young Offenders’ Institute helped put them on the other.
The town council and the Christmas lights committee have also created an illuminated Tree of Peace by placing strings of lights around the base of a large monkey puzzle tree.
Residents are encouraged to write a message and attach it to the chain on the barriers around the tree.
There are also reflective poppy keyrings, which are available for a donation to the Royal British Legion’s poppy appeal from the town council office at Woodleigh.
