THE transformation of a historic chapel into a vibrant community shop, café and heritage centre has received a timely funding boost.
The Cotherstone Old Chapel Project, has launched its second share issue offer and has secured support from the Co-operatives UK shares match funding scheme.
Project chairman Mark Siswick said: “We are incredibly grateful for the match funding support.
“This will play a pivotal role in realising our vision of creating a thriving community facility that services the needs of our residents and visitors alike.”
Since the purchase of the chapel earlier this year, which was made possible thanks to grants from Teesdale Action Partnership and Durham County Council towns and villages fund, the project has made significant strides forward. A pop-up ice cream shop in the foyer of the building proved to be a resounding success in the summer, while renovations to the roof, floor and heating systems have progressed smoothly.
The committee says work to transform the chapel into a shop, café and heritage centre is on time and within budget thanks to the “tireless dedication of volunteers”.
Officials say the match-funding will enable the project to enhance facilities as well as provide more opportunities for community engagement and ensure the long-term sustainability of the chapel.
They are inviting individuals and organisations to invest in the second share offer.
Mr Siswick added: “We encourage everyone who believes in the future of our community to invest in this exciting project.
“Their investment will help us create a space that brings people together, fosters a sense of belonging and contributes to the vitality of our village.”
