Legends back mental health fundraiser

SPORTING LEGENDS: Sir Ian Botham and Dave Thomas joined Claire Tobbell and Ian Tobbell (right) when they handed over a cheque to Paul Bannister

TWO legends gave up their time for free to support a special sportsman’s dinner organised to coincide with mental health awareness week.

Former England cricketing superstar Sir Ian Botham and ex-England international footballer Dave Thomas entertained guests at Barnard Castle Cricket Club on Friday.

The sporting legends dinner had been organised by town charity fundraising group The Clique to raise awareness of mental health issues among men and cash for the charity ManHealth.

During the evening £11,845 raised from a charity walk held last month in memory of Andrew Tobbell was handed over to Paul Bannister from ManHealth, which hosts sessions in Barnard Castle for men suffering from depression and other mental health problems.

The marathon walk to Middleton and back, which was organised by Mr Tobbell’s brother Ian and widow Claire, saw more than 150 people take part.

Mr Tobbell said: “I never imagined we would get this amount of money and it is down to the generosity of the people of Teesdale.”
