Last orders for historic village pub

FOND FAREWELL: Claire and Alastair Ross

OFFICIAL plans have been lodged to convert an award-winning pub into a home.

Alastair and Claire Ross announced their intentions to transform the Hutton Magna’s Oak Tree Inn in March after efforts to sell on the pub and restaurant fell through.

Plans have now been submitted to Durham County Council to convert the village’s only pub into a three-bedroom home.

Mr and Mrs Ross moved from London in 2002 and their time at the Oak Tree saw it garner a reputation for excellence with inclusion in the Good Food Guide and the Michelin Guide.

The grade II-listed building was once part of the Wycliffe Estate before it was split up and sold.

It became part of Tommy Carter’s empire in the 1930s and his family still run and own a number of pubs around the dale.

The pub’s last day is today (Sunday, May 6).
