Hoping to grow crop of volunteers

WINNERS: Action from a previous Gainford Show

THE programme for this year’s Gainford Horticultural Society Show, is bursting at the staples with categories for green-fingered growers, bakers and photographers to show off their talents.

However, the show committee is also hoping to grow a few new volunteers to help out with some of the jobs on the day.

The show, which takes place on Saturday, August 17, has gone from strength to strength, moving from a marquee on the green to the primary school and Scout hut to accommodate the wealth of entries.

Sue Taylor, chairwoman for the society, said three stalwarts had stepped down from the committee. She added: “We only have five people on the committee now and we are a bit stretched on the day setting up all the tables. We are looking for helpers to put up the tables on the Friday and then help take down.

“It’s not a very onerous thing as we only meet five times through the year.

“We’d also encourage everyone to submit entries as it’s an open show and people don’t have to be resident in Gainford.”

The show will also see the return of children’s entertainers Dot and Zooky, who mesmerised youngsters with their quirky balloon-inspired show last year. There will also be face painters and sumptuous selection of cakes and refreshments during the day.
