THE history of Raby Castle and its treasures will be the topic of a free public lecture in aid of charity.

Raby Castle’s senior guide, Mike, will talk about a some of the more interesting paintings, porcelain and furniture on show at the castle at Barnard Castle School on Thursday, October 11, 7.15pm.

The event is being organised by Barnard Castle Rotary Club in aid of the Great North Air Ambulance and local charities.

557701. Tickets will also be available on the door. But to help those organising the event, people are asked to book in advance.

Meanwhile, Raby Castle is offering visitors a rare privilege – to look behind the closed doors that have intrigued many when touring the public routes of the castle.

The tours this autumn offer a behind the scenes glimpse into areas that have previously been restricted from public access and guides will tell the equally intriguing stories of how these rooms were used.

This will be the first year that the castle and grounds have been open during the autumn.

In addition to the bookable guided castle tours, which will be held on selected dates in October, the tearooms and gift shop will all be open daily from 9am until December 23.

October half-term Halloween will be activities in the gardens for children.

Castle tours will be held at 11am from Wednesday to Sunday each week between October 5 and November 4. Visitors will have a chance to hear fascinating stories of the castle’s history from knowledgeable guides and enjoy a rare opportunity to see previously unseen rooms.

Tickets are £25 per person and are bookable at www.rabycastle.com/shop
