Evenwood primary pupils feel the benefit of a marathon challenge

ON YOUR MARKS: Students and teachers at Evenwood School are pounding the pavement in a mile-a-day challenge to run a marathon

PUPILS at a dale school have embarked on a challenge laid down by one of their teachers – to run a marathon.

Students at Evenwood Primary School were set the challenge by their teacher, Paul Tucker, to run 26 miles and every morning before lessons begin they have been ticking off part of the total.

One week into the challenge Mr Tucker, who is a member of Evenwood Road Runners, said he and other teachers could already see the difference it was making to their pupils.

Mr Tucker said: “In a week there has been a massive impact. We have noticed that children are more switched on, energised and rosy faced when they start lessons.

“I spoke with three or four teachers and asked if we could do the challenge. I have always had a big thing with running and feel it benefits both physical and mental health.”

It is not just the students who are benefiting. Some teachers and parents are also donning their running shoes to take part in the challenge and run alongside their charges on the school grounds prior to lessons starting. All the pupils who complete the marathon will receive a medal.
