FOR the past 38 years, Doris Gill has asked friends and relatives to donate cash to her favourite charity, the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS), instead of buying her gifts at Christmas and for her birthday.
Mrs Gill, 89, who is a resident at Kings Court Care Home, in Barnard Castle, also had another wish granted earlier this month when a vintage coffee morning was organised to raise more funds for the charity.
Diane Simpson, lifestyle co-ordinator at the care home, said the idea to host the coffee morning had been put forward by Mrs Gill as part of the home’s wishing tree. She said: “Residents get to put forward ideas of what they would like to do and we chose Doris’ idea last month.”
Staff and residents rallied to support Mrs Gill’s request to organise an event to raise funds for the GNAAS.
The coffee morning, which had a vintage theme, complete with decorated bicycles, was deemed a huge success and raised £120.
The home is hoping to organise more coffee mornings in the future but have a few other wishes to grant first.
Representatives from GNAAS, Tracy Bowstead and Sophie Bendelow, said they were delighted with the donation and said every little bit of money helped keep the service in the air.
