Contest to encourage more people to illuminate their homes

PRIZES: Sponsors Chris Schroeter

DISAPPOINTED that their villages do not have a festive display, residents of Toft Hill and Etherley have teamed up to put on a competition to encourage more homes to be decorated.
Villagers Donna Hopper and Sharon Walker decided to start the challenge after people commented on social media about the lack of festive street lighting.
Mrs Hopper, who has been lighting up her home for about 25 years, said: “All we have is on the community centre, but it is set back so you can’t see them.”
She added that there is little time to raise the cash for a community lights switch-on this year so the competition was the only alternative.
Mrs Walker contacted businesses to sponsor cash prizes.
She said: “In the space of 15 minutes I managed to raise £350.”
They now have five prizes, with the top home getting £150.
Companies which sponsored the competition are OF Bell Injection Moulding, Michael Teasdale hairdressing, Kemp Commercials and Spares, Dominic Hopper Double Glazing and Champion Gardens. Judging will take place throughout the week with the prizes being awarded on Saturday, December 19.
