A POPULAR community centre has had to close after 40 years due to costly “compliance issues” .
For 40 years Stainton Grove Community Centre was the heart of the village, hosting regular events including toddler groups, a youth club, WI and a lunch club. However, the charitable organisation that has run the venue for the past 40 years will hand it back to the owners, Durham County Council, at the end of the month.
At a meeting in November members of Stainton Grove Community Association (SGCA) voted to dissolve the organisation and dispose of the assets.
Sue Chapman, from the SGCA ,said: “There were many compliance issues we had to deal with and lack support from local residents. It would have been great if there were enough bands wanting rehearsal space but unfortunately we need a lot of money to carry out maintenance schedules stipulated in the lease.”
A family night was held at the community centre on November 29, when residents were able to bid a fond farewell. Ms Chapman and Cilla Bushby, stalwart volunteers who ran the venue, were presented with flowers for their hard and dedicated work over the four decades.
Ms Chapman added: “Without the support of the local residents we’re fighting a losing battle and it’s time to walk away. We’d rather stop now while we are still in the black.
“Being positive it will leave us all more time to enjoy events in other village halls.
“We’ve had a good run over the years but it’s time to let it go.”
Last week, the community centre’s hosted its last ever event when it served as a polling station for the general election.
