Cloudburst fails to dampen Butterknowle Scouts’ spirits

READY

MORE than 20 Sea Scouts braved rain and hail on Cockfield Fell for a sponsored mud run in aid of future activities.

Butterknowle Sea Scouts seized the opportunity of the inaugural Cockfield Chase fell running event to stage their own dash, and cashed in by selling cakes and refreshments to the athletes.

The Cubs, Beavers and Scouts set off on their run at 6pm under an ominous dark cloud, which later burst into a shower of rain and hailstones mid-race.

Nevertheless, all of the runners completed the rigorous course.

Jane Anderson, of the Scouts, said the mud run is only one of many fundraising activities planned.

She added: “The kids are raising money for camps and the 2020 international Jamboree at Wolsingham. That is an opportunity for us. It’s an eight day camp and it is quite pricey, but the activities are fantastic.”
