Church organist Jean bows out after 70 years

FAREWELL TO A TREASURE: Jean Tallentire

THE congregation at St Mary’s, Whorlton, marked the retirement of Miss Jean Tallentire from her role as church organist.
Jean stepped into this role 70 years ago at the request of the then Vicar of Whorlton Revd Porteous, and has played the organ at Sunday services ever since.
Brought up at East Shaws, in Westwick, Jean continued to serve Whorlton church even after her move into Barnard Castle and, in days past, would cycle to and from Whorlton for services in all weathers.
She jokes that she knows every incline on the road to and from Barney.
Described as a “treasure” by one of the congregation, the current vicar spoke of Jean’s faithful Christian service in using her talents for the good of others before friends presented her with a gift hamper and flowers to mark her retirement.
Revd Canon Alec Harding
