Christmas goes to Chris’s head but it’s all for a good cause

CRAZY CHRISTMAS: Chris Coverdale added a little Christmas decoration to his head to raise cash for cancer charity

A BARNARD Castle man has taken putting up his Christmas decorations to a new level to raise cash for a cancer charity.

Chris Coverdale, 52, decided to brave the shave for MacMillan Cancer Research – and make people smile by having a Christmas tree and stars coloured onto his head.

Mr Coverdale, who works as a clean room technician at Sedgefield, said: “I recently lost my sister-in-law, Claire, to cancer and have many friends who have also suffered a personal loss because of it. Last year I made some wooden tea light holders and raised about £85 for the charity, but this year I wanted to do something a bit different.”

After getting the idea from his hairdresser, Diane Bell of Riley’s in Barnard Castle, he decided to take the plunge and Brave the Shave, but with a little Christmas humour added in. He added: “I normally get my haircut regularly and keep it very short, but since August I’ve been trying to grow it as long as possible. I set myself a target of raising £500 in sponsorship. So far I’ve raised £420, which is a little short of my target, but I’m leaving my online page running over the festive period to see if I can inspire more donations.”

After the initial head shave, hair on the back and sides of his head was shaped into a Christmas tree and stars, then dyed green and orange.

He added: “It feels a bit chilly, but it’s my bit of Christmas. I’m hoping it stays in place for a company meeting on December 12.” Visit bravetheshave.macmillan.org.uk/shavers/chris-coverdale
