Cash boost helps club offer a warm welcome

IN STITCHES: Residents in Mickleton enjoy weekly get togethers and have bought sewing machines thanks to a funding boost from County Durham Community Foundation TM pic

A WELCOME funding boost will keep a dale community club’s crafters creating.

Members of the Thursday Club, which meets at Mickleton Village Hall ironically every Wednesday, between 1.30pm and 3pm, have been putting grant money from the County Durham Community Fund to good use, whipping up fabric decorations.

The club began life last year when the hall was designated as a warm space to help people who were struggling with the cost of heating their home during the winter.

Residents enjoyed meeting up at the hall and taking part in their favourite activities such as sewing, playing dominoes, table tennis and practising music.

Sandra Moorhouse, from Mickleton Community Events (MiCE), said: “It has evolved since we first began and we like to call it a welcome space now rather than a warm space.

“Everyone comes to do their own thing at the club. We have some people who enjoy sewing and others bring their instruments and play.

“We usually see about 12 people each week, but there can be a lot more. The club works really well and everyone enjoys themselves.”

Late last year the club received £850 from the County Durham Community Fund which has enabled the club to purchase two new sewing machines as well as an overlocker sewing machine.

Crafters have created festive bunting for the village hall and also made Christmas stockings for the village’s children. The sewing machines can also be loaned out.

She added: “We have lots of material that has been brought in and donated and we have sessions on how to make different things.

“We will be busy starting to do stuff for Easter because there is always a free event in the village then.”

As well as enjoying getting together in the hall, residents enjoy catching up for a chat with a cup of tea and a freshly baked cake.

The Thursday Club meets at Mickleton Village Hall every Wednesday from 1.30pm until 3pm and is provided free.
