Bowled over by plans to revamp rundown green

BETTER DAYS AHEAD: The former Cockfield bowling green

PLANS to turn a derelict former sports ground into a beauty spot are taking shape in Cockfield.

Parish councillors agreed to get quotes from landscapers to revamp an old bowling green by turning it into a picnic park.

Chairwoman Cllr Brenda Singleton said: “It looks like a building site at the moment. Years ago it used to be a bowling green and it has fallen into disrepair for various reasons.

“Now we want to develop it and turn it into an area so people can go and sit and chatter in the summer time.

“We will put seats there and tart it up. It will look nice and it will bring it back into use.”

Cllr Christine Watters suggested adding colour to the area by planting flowers.

However, councillors noted there was a problem with accessing the area because the landowner adjoining the green isn’t keen on allowing people to use his gate.

The chairwoman said: “We will also have to see about getting it open on our side.”

Cllr Neville Singleton added: “Down the side the fence is overgrown. I am going to get in touch with the county council, because if you can prove there are no bird nests in there, then [you can chop it back]. There has already been a gate through there, so what we can do is make a 15ft gate in there.”

Cllr David Britton advised that he had been in touch with two contractors who would visit the site and offer quotes to do the landscaping.

He added that he would also have complete plans available at the next meeting for members to agree on.

A suggestion of installing a permanent concrete BBQ in the park was rejected on health and safety grounds and potential implications for the council’s insurance.

Cllr Graham Smith suggested there should be a grand opening once the revamp is complete.

The former bowling green is located next to the Pauline Charlton Pavilion and the village play park.
