Bowes Museum worker aiming for Tourism Superstar title
The Bowes Museum is hoping to see Philippa Heywood claim the title of Durham Tourism Superstar.
Philippa, who is the welcome team co-ordinator, was shortlisted for the award by Visit County Durham in recognition of her professionalism and enthusiasm for ensuring museum visitors enjoy the best possible experience.
“It’s humbling. I’m a representative of my team and this is recognition of their work as well,” she said.
Philippa is responsible for the 18-strong front-of-house team, starting at the admissions desk.
However, despite living close to the museum, it took a few years for Philippa to make it through the doors.
“We’d walk in the grounds when I was a kid, but I didn’t get to see the Silver Swan until I was an adult,” she said.
On Friday, she marked eight years of working at The Bowes Museum which she says is a special place.
“There’s something contagious about it. Once you start working here it’s hard to imagine going anywhere else,” she said.
“There’s a real passion among the staff, and among the visitors as well.
“The Bowes Museum is something a little bit out there, you don’t expect to see a French chateau in a market town in Teesdale, and local people feel a real sense of ownership.”
In 2018 The Bowes Museum’s visitor assistant Hannah Fawcett made the county shortlist.
Last year, Raby Castle was in the spotlight as 86-year-old Jimmy Nicol, a volunteer room steward, came third in the national competition.
Philippa is one of six on the shortlist. Other nominations include Durham Cathedral, Kynren, Ushaw Historic House, the Lumley Castle Hotel and Two Tales children’s literature centre in Durham.
The title Durham Tourism Superstar 2026 is decided by public vote which is open until June 26.
