A FUN sweep on the recent World Cup has provided a timely cash boost for a food bank operating in the dale.
Regulars at The Old Well, in Barnard Castle, each paid £5 to draw one of the 32 teams which took part in the competition in Qatar.
As luck would have it, landlady Rima Chatterjee picked out Argentina, who lifted the cup after defeating France on penalties.
Ms Chatterjee decided to donate the £160 proceeds to the Storehouse foodbank, which is operated by the Influence Church at Barnard Castle Methodist Church Hall.
The sweep was organised by Susan and Ian Kirkbride, who made sure there was no fixing going on.
“No-one knew which team they had picked until all the envelopes had been sold, following which, Susan opened them in the presence of an independent witness and compiled a list of the names,” said Mr Kirkbride.
“Regulars Andrew Hedley (England) and Bill Laver (France) were particularly pleased with their selections but in the end, the real winner was Rima’s choice of the Storehouse when Argentina won the coveted trophy.”
