CONDITIONS may have been difficult during the two summer heatwaves – but that did not stop the growers of Evenwood putting on a first class display at the second Travellers Rest Leek, Flower and Vegetable show.
It was a successful event for Hall Johnson and Paul Tennick, who took the prizes for best leeks, best exhibit and best veg in show.
David Readfern produced the biggest leeks on show, – 247 cubic inches – while organiser Chris Geddes grew the biggest onion.
Paul Proud, who won the trophy for most points at the inaugural show last year, picked up the silverware for the best flower and most points in flowers.
The heaviest marrow was grown by Andrew Shaw.
Mr Geddes said he was delighted by the this year’s efforts.
“The show was bigger than last year as we had more classes and the standard of produce was in my eyes better. We booked a marquee and both that and the function room were full to the brim.
“It was probably the best local show in the county bar none – not my words, but the words of most people that visited.”
He added: “It was a tough season and some people were down to their last pair of leeks, but they made the bench and were of a fantastic standard.”
Mr Geddes thanked all the local businesses and supporters who sponsored the show, along with the landlords of the Travellers Rest, who supplied the marquee.
“Without them we would of struggled,” he added.
