TOWN centre department store, which has won prizes for its window displays celebrated four decades in business in Barnard Castle this month with a birthday themed presentation.
Staff at Boyes, in Horsemarket, pulled out all the stops to create an eye-catching window display complete with giant cake and balloons to mark the 40th anniversary of the store’s opening.
The store, which has won several first prizes in window dressing contests this year, opened in October 1983 and included a vintage photograph of the original shop staff in the display.
As well as giving out pens and water bottles to customers who visited on the anniversary, a celebratory party with staff, past and present, was held.
Andrew Boyes, chairman of the chain, which began in Scarborough in 1881, paid a visit to pass on his congratulations.
He said: “I was a junior director at the time this store opened. My late father was the chairman.
“The business was started by my great grandfather with one store in Scarborough.”
He added: “It was an exciting time when it opened and it has done well ever since.
With all the changes that have taken place in the past year it is a nice town and it is a nice to be part of it and this shop works well.”
He said: “The success in Barnard Castle is down to the local people who staff the store and keep the customers coming back each week and they have a great rapport.”
