VOLUNTEERS at the Scarth Hall, in Staindrop, have put together a varied programme of entertaining for the coming weeks.
First up, on February 24, is a stand-up show called Where There’s Muck, There’s Bras.
Part of the Highlights Rural Touring Scheme, the show is performed by stan-up poet Kate Fox and actor Joey Holden.
It explores the ways women are represented (or not) in ideas of “Northernness” , looking at the true stories of famous female writers, scientists, sports stars, politicians, protestors and musicians.
Another Highlights show visits Staindrop on April 14 when comic poet John Hegley presents Family Wordship in a performance that starts at a family-friendly 6.30pm and is suitable for everyone aged six and older.
Two music and entertainment events have been lined up.
There will be a Valentine’s Evening disco on Saturday, February 16. Doors open at 7pm and the event is for over 18s only.
St Patrick’s Day will be celebrated on Saturday, March 16. There will be live music, food and the bar open from 7.30pm.
The centre will host a spring craft and produce market on Saturday, March 30, from 10am to 2pm. Admission is free and refreshments will be available.
Looking further ahead, there will be a Spirit festival in May; Hot Club du Nord return in June and at the end of the month there will be a streaming of the Glastonbury festival and in July and Americana night is being lined up.
Regular events continue at the hall.
The community cafe meets every Monday morning, 9am to noon. Open mic night is the first Friday of the month from 7.30pm and from March there will be a family disco following open mic night, 6.30pm to 9.30pm.
IT support is available on the first Thursday (10am to 11am) and second Sunday (1pm to 3pm) of each month at free drop-in sessions.
For lovers of old fashioned LP records, the Vinyl Countdown group, which launched last year, meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 7pm, when enthusiasts are welcome to take along one or two of their favourites to share on a state-of-the-art sound system.
The monthly tea dances continue on the third Sunday of the month from 3pm to 6pm.
