Potter raising cash for a cause close to her heart

FAMILY: Judy Caplin at work in her studio creating #throwforthenhs pottery items

A CERAMIC artist from Mickleton is using her talents to raise cash for the NHS.
Judy Caplin, who is part of the Teesdale Art Network group, is firing up a collection of plant pots, vases and tea-light holders as part of a national “Throw for the NHS” scheme. It is particularly close to her heart as her daughter, Ruby Carrington, is working on the frontline as a trainee anaesthetist at Queen’s Hospital, in Romford, London.
The project works by pottery artists creating pieces on the first day of the month and then posting images of the pottery process – from throwing the clay, drying and firing in a kiln to the final glazing.
People can search for #throwforthenhs on social media. Mrs Caplin threw her first pieces on May 1 and is planning another batch on June 1. She said: “I did couple of hours. There were three of the tea light holders I do, a couple of vases and six of what I call succulent pots which can hold small plants.”
She made videos which will later be posted to her Instagram account. Images of the progress of the items will also be on Instagram and Facebook. The items will have a small NHS stamp, as well as Ms Caplin’s own stamp, on the bottom. Items range from between £20 and £65 and this includes postage and packaging.
