New-look folk group Cosmotheka head to Teesdale

BACK ON THE ROAD: The new-look Cosmotheka

A MUCH-loved band on the folk circuit are returning to Teesdale in a new guise.

From 1972 to 1999, brothers Dave and Al Sealey, were Cosmotheka.

Performing tunes from the Music Hall Days, they brought their own harmonies and twists to any number of classics from the likes of Gus Alan, Dan Leno and Harry Champion.

As well as performing live, they chalked up numerous radio and television appearances.

Since the death of Al in 1999, Dave Sealey has returned to the stage as a solo performer with one-man-shows of the work of two iconic showmen such as Stanley Holloway and Max Miller.

Now Dave is back with his son Dan – former bassist with Ocean Colour Scene – and Adam Barry.

They will present a brand new show, performing the songs of Cosmotheka at Bowes and Gilmonby Village Hall next week.

Fans can expect a lot of the old songs played with more instruments and a new twist.

Promoter Graham Henley said: “Dan’s guitar skills and dry wit introduce a compelling new dimension to the Cosmotheka collaboration.

“As instigator of the new venture, Dan is determined to drag his crusty, ancient, musical relic of a father shouting and bawling into the 21st century.”

Following the rapturous standing ovation given to Cosmotheka at the 2017 Bromyard Folk Festival 50th anniversary, Dave and Dan Sealey, together with their great mate, Adam Barry, have been catapulted back into the limelight.

“We are delighted to welcome them here to Bowes,” added Mr Henley.

“This will be a very special night for us here in Bowes. When Mike Bettison and I had our show on Radio Teesdale, we would try and sneak in a Cosmotheka track at every opportunity.

“Little did we ever dream that we would ever get the opportunity to enjoy the sounds being recreated here on our doorstep.’

He added: “It promises to be a very magical evening. Cosmotheka now – Dave Sealey, Dan Sealey and Adam Barry – present songs from the Music Hall days, in the inimitable style first unleashed by Dave Sealey and brother Al in the 90s.

“This is a show not to be missed.”

The show takes place on Thursday, November 29.

Doors and bar are open at 7pm, with the show scheduled to start at 7.30pm.

Tickets are available for £10, concs £9 and £5 for students.
