It’s full steam ahead as railway open days return

The Friends of Thorpe Light Railway is holding its first open day of the season on April 28

VOLUNTEERS at a 15-inch gauge railway in the heart of Teesdale are inviting enthusiasts to the first in a series of open days over the summer.

Thorpe Light Railway, on the banks of the River Tees, near Whorlton, is hosting its first open day of the season on Sunday, April 28.

Anthony Coulls, chairman of the Friends of Thorpe Light Railway, said: “It will be a low key affair and everyone is welcome.

“It is the ideal opportunity for people to come to see what we do, enjoy the beautiful countryside and even catch the end of the daffodils.”

The Friends of Thorpe Light Railway, a registered charity, has run the railway since 2012.

During the winter volunteers have continued to restore, refurbish and repair ready for 2019.

Mr Coulls said: “The open days are a great chance for people to come along and learn more about the railway or just enjoy a ride on the train, pulled by a Rio Grande class locomotive.”

Trains will be running from noon to 4pm and the entry fee is £2.50 to ride all day. Under 5s and members ride free. Light refreshments will be available on the day.

For more details of the open days and the railway visit the website thorpelight railway.co.uk or contact Mr Coulls on 07833 194286.
