Comedy and folk head the line-up for summer at The Witham, Barnard Castle

FINAL CURTAIN: The Witham's director Katy Taylor unveils her final season of events before heading to a new post in Northumberland

FOR lovers of live performance, comedy and folk music take centre stage at The Witham during the summer season.

Comedy highlights come thick and fast courtesy of Barnard Castle’s Funny Way To Be club, with double Emmy Award winner Rich Hall’s Hoedown on June 7 already a sell-out.

Gyles Brandreth brings his Break a Leg show on Saturday, July 28, while George Egg will be combing cookery and comedy to serve up the laughs on Saturday, June 23.

There are two Edinburgh Festival preview days – July 14 and 21 – each featuring four comics who will be trying out new material as they head north for the annual fringe festival.

Four top notch folk groups have been lined up for the coming weeks, kicking off with Heidi Talbot and John McCusker on June 9.

Folk power trio The East Pointers will bring Celtic harmonies to the dale on June 26, while The Drystones take to the stage on July 12.

Expect footstompers from Sheelanagig when they visit on August 31.

Classical music and dance fans will be treated to a host of live and encore screenings ranging from Sir Simon Rattle’s farewell concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker to Swan lake from the Royal Opera House.

There are a number of live and encore theatre screenings, however those who prefer to see actors in the flesh can see Beyond the End of the Road on Friday, July 27.

The major exhibition in the coming three months is Of Life and Land, by Yorkshire photographer Lucy Saggers.

The Witham is also supporting the town’s 1940s weekend with a beginners basic ballroom session on Saturday, June 23, and a repeat screening of An American in Paris the day before.

Marketing manager Sarah Gent said: “These are exciting times at The Witham.

“We are delighted with the variety and quality of the arts events that are programmed this summer and look forward to welcoming our regulars as well as lots of new faces to enjoy what lies ahead.”

She also thanked the Darlington Building Society for sponsoring the summer programme and all other supporters.
