A PLAY celebrating the life and heroism of a First World War nurse is to be staged in Whorlton early next month.

As part of the new Highlights Rural Touring Scheme season, Theatre Newfoundland Labrador present Our Frances.

The plays tells the story of Frances Cluett, who nursed soldiers of all nationalities from a small clearing station outside Rouen, in France.

Frances was born and lived in Belleoram, Newfoundland. In 1916, she joined the Volunteer Aid Detachment.

After a month of medical training she was shipped overseas and served for four years at the 10th General Hospital in Rouen, France.

The play is inspired by her many letters to home, detailing the horrors and heartbreak she witnessed, and revealing how her humour and resilience captured the love and loyalty of all she encountered.

Our Frances is performed by a cast of three and is visiting Teesdale with Highlights Rural Touring Scheme as part of a partnership with Canada’s Contact East arts organisation.

This partnership allows Highlights to bring some of the best artists from the eastern provinces of North America to rural communities.

The show is being staged at Whorlton Village Hall on Tuesday, October 3, doors open 7pm for curtain up at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £10 adults, £5 children and £25 for a family ticket. For more details and tickets, call 01833 627419, or go to www.highlightsnorth.co. uk
