Darlington Operatic Society have burst onto the stage with Footloose, a show they first performed in 2012. Originally, Footloose was a smash hit in a 1984 film starring Kevin Baker, here they have brought their own talented cast and crew to entertain until Saturday 4th November.
It has been several years since I’ve reviewed at Darlington Operatic Society and I must admit I’ve missed it. I’ve spent most of my life involved in Operatic societies and DOS are one of those productions where you remember how talented the cast are, forgetting this is not a touring West End Production.
The story follows Ren McCormack, Ben Connor, who along with his mother have moved to a sleepy town in Bomont. Due to fatal circumstances, they have banned dancing and modern music in the town. The local minister Rev. Shaw Moore, Julian Cound, is leading the ban across the town. As Ren finds himself fitting in with his new life he becomes friends with Ariel, Rachel Geddes, the minister’s daughter, with his disgust as he has lost his way in life.
Julian Cound, as the minister, commands his position perfectly, showing how his character develops throughout, as Ren shows him the way to change. Rachel Geddes, is such a delight every time she appears on stage, with such presence, pure perfection.
There are many big numbers throughout the show, certainly being my favourite as Holding Out For A Hero, this is where you feel, this is a professional show, not a local company, so pleased we have so much talent in our area. The direction and choreography from Joanne Hand is so enjoyable throughout.
The story may not be the strongest, but filling the stage with a young cast of pure quality, provides an amazingly entertaining evening.
Footloose runs until Saturday 4th November at Darlington Hippodrome.
