Shock defeat for Barnard Castle
Premier Division Barnard Castle v Hartlepool
Barnard Castle remain top of the table despite suffering their first Premier Division defeat of the season.
Hartlepool pulled off a shock win at Vere Road and with Richmondshire winning at Marske, Barney’s lead was cut to eight points.
Karl Carver won the toss on a sunny Saturday and asked Pool to bat, a decision that failed to pay dividends as openers Yash Vagadia and Craig Symington put on 72 for the first wicket before the latter was trapped LBW by Carver for 27.
By the time Vagadia was bowled by Suminda Lakshan for 94 off 93 balls, Hartlepool were 161-4.
A quick-fire 42 from Kyle Davis and a disciplined 27-run unbeaten stand from eighth-wicket pairing Matthew Maloy and Max Jackson saw the visitors reach 256 off their 50 overs. Carver finished with 4-72.
After getting off to a poor start, Barney never looked like chasing down their target, losing wickets at regular intervals.
Jackson made early inroads, removing the top three cheaply to leave the home side wobbling on 40-3.
He eventually finished with 4-46 while the home side’s top scorer was Lakshan with 29.
Hartlepool 256-7 (50 overs) bt Barney 166 all out (39.3 overs) by 90 runs.
Division One Bedale v Barnard Castle II
Barnard Castle Seconds won the toss and chose to bat but could only make 111.
Skipper for the day Peter Stanwix top scored with 27 while Daniel Edwards took 7-25 for the home side.
With the ball, Barney gave a good account of themselves early on, reducing Bedale to 68-4, but it was asking too much to defend such a low total and the winning runs came in the 29th over.
Barney Seconds 111 all out (31.3 overs) lost to Bedale 115-4 (28.5 overs) by 6 wickets
Sunday Conference North Thornaby III v Barnard Castle III
Thornaby Thirds took the majority of the points from a “winning” draw against Barney Thirds.
The home side won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 156-7 off their 40 overs with Bradley Sexton top scoring with 50.
Archer Byrne took 3-36 and Finlay Kirkup 2-25 for Barney, who struggled with the bat but managed to get to the end of their innings nine-down. Thornaby took 15 points and Barney five.
Thornaby Thirds 156-7 (40 overs) drew with Barney Thirds 114-9 (40 overs)
