BARNEY continued their defence of the Kerridge Cup on Sunday with an emphatic win against Marske. It might have been a testing target when Barney, under the Duckworth Lewis system used in rain-affected games, were required to make 138 from 32 overs in response to Marske’s 159-9 from 40.
At 59-4 in the 16th over it was looking still more distant. But Richard Borrowdale and Karl Carver combined in an assured partnership of 82 at a run a ball and Barney were home by 6 wickets.
Borrowdale has been short of runs in this curtailed season, but a return to form was inevitable. It came when it was most required.
He hit four fours and three sixes in ensuring that Barney qualify for the semi-final.
Marske made more than they looked like doing at one stage. After an uncertain start, they lost wickets regularly with the Robs, Dixon and West, both profiting.
A seventh stand of 47 between Jamie Hood and Jack English put them back in contention before West bowled both of them.
The long delay for rain of almost three hours, with Marske at 70-5, changed the match. A wet ball made it more difficult for the fielding side.
After the necessary adjustments had been made, Barney lost too many early wickets for comfort with Finn Usher, James Quinn and James Alderson all falling cheaply. When James Clarkson went for a composed 24 doubts might have crept in.
Borrowdale surveyed the scene, taking only a single from his first 13 balls and Carver was similarly circumspect. But they had matters under control and the last 53 runs came from 7.2 overs with 16 balls in hand.

Barney v Stokesley
Barney’s league match against Stokesley was abandoned after 43 overs because of rain. At the time Stokesley were in a splendid position as all Barney’s bowlers seemed to be affected by a strong wind.
Both Weighell brothers, Andrew and Jonny, batted assertively and 16-year-old Craig Baptist played an extremely mature and controlled innings, playing a series of pleasing strokes off his legs.
The draw sees Barney fall to seventh in the NYSD Premier Division, making victories imperative against those above them if they are somehow to challenge for the title in the coming weeks.

Northallerton v Barney II
On a tricky pitch which never inspired confidence in batsmen, Barney went down in a close match to a strong Northallerton.
A partnership of 55 for the sixth wicket between captain Richard Stanwix and Cameron McKnight, followed by a solid contribution from Peter Stanwix, gave Barney a total an adequate total of 140.
With Northallerton at 22-2, with Tom Brooks naggingly accurate and McKnight building up a head of steam, it looked as though it might be enough.
But Northallerton regrouped with Danny Wade playing the key innings. Although things had tilted in Barney’s favour again at 108-7, Northallerton just had the enough in reserve.
