Barnard Castle Gatorz put up a fight in league opener

MAKING HISTORY: The Barnard Castle Gatorz line up for their first league match

Ladies rugby

HISTORY was made when the Barney Gatorz ladies took to the pitch for their first league game.

The club welcomed Winlaton Vixens to the Demesnes.

The inexperienced Gatorz dominated the early exchanges between the two sides with good tries scored by Simone Laverick and Katie Boddy complemented by great tactical kicking from the joint lady-of-the-match Danielle Scarr.

The game was a pulsating affair with both teams neither asking for nor giving any quarter.

It took almost 30 minutes for the more experienced Winlaton team to register their first points. The game ebbed and flowed with the lead changing several times in the entertaining and exciting match.

It was not until the second half, when the greater experience and superior fitness of the Vixens began to show.

Despite injuries, the fresh legs of the impact players did manage to stem to Vixens tide.

The Gatorz scored thanks to a brace of tries from Evie Peacock and some excellent points from the boot of Danielle Scarr.

However, a barnstorming finish put the match beyond the Gatorz.

The final score was Gatorz 27- 36 Vixens. The game was played in a good spirit and was enjoyed by the many supporters who had come to watch.

Massive thanks goes to our match day sponsor, Technimark, from Middleton-in-Teesdale, and our new kit sponsors, Clark and Degnan and Archers Ice Cream. The ladies love the new team strip and are thrilled with the continued support.

The club’s ladies and girls section is growing all the time and new players are always made very welcome.

Ladies over the age of 11, regardless of experience, will find it an amazing experience on and off the pitch.
