Athletes make their mark at Special Olympics GB National Summer Games

Athletes from Special Olympics GB Teesdale branch have been making their mark at the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games, with impressive performances in both indoor bowls and golf.

On July 10, Jonathan Taylour travelled to Plymouth to compete in the indoor bowls competition at the Plymouth Life Centre.

Over two days, he played 12 fifty-minute matches, finishing an excellent fourth in his competition group.

A week later, Erica Dixon, fresh from completing the London Marathon in April, travelled to Glasgow to compete in the golf competition at Cowglen Golf Club. Erica was the only female among the nine competitors in the 18-hole event and finished fourth in the Level 5B division.

Held every four years, the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games represent the highest level of domestic competition for athletes with intellectual disabilities and provide the main qualification pathway for the Special Olympics World Summer Games, which will take place in Santiago, Chile, in October 2027.

Christine Taylour, who leads the Special Olympics GB Teesdale branch, said: “Jonathan and Erica both performed brilliantly and represented Teesdale with great determination. We are incredibly proud of their achievements.

“They’ll be back in action on August 27 when they travel to Birmingham for the Special Olympics GB swimming competition.”

The Teesdale branch is now looking to build on its success by expanding the range of sports it offers, including boccia, cycling and triathlon, while continuing to grow its membership.

The club is keen to welcome new athletes and is also looking for volunteers and supporters who can help with coaching, organising events, fundraising or providing practical assistance.

Every contribution helps create more opportunities for local people with intellectual disabilities to enjoy sport, develop new skills and be part of an inclusive community.
