RUNNERS young and old braved the winter chill to take part in Teesdale Atheltics Club’s annual festive races.
More than 70 people took part in the two events – a 1k run around the grounds of The Bowes Museum for younger athletes, some accompanied by their parents – and a 5k which also took in the sports field on neighbouring Barnard Castle School.
As with last year, the runs took the form of reindeer chases.
When the chasing athletes tagged the reindeer, they picked up a number which offered the chance to win a prize at the finish line.
Chances of quick times were also hampered by Santa stopping runners and handing out gifts on the course.
In addition, all who finished the runs received a medal.
First home in the 1k race was Aidan Marmont, who finished ahead of nine-year-old Edmund Sheard in second and Kai North, in third.
And it was another youngster, 14-year-old Lewis Parker, who was first back in the 5k.
Second was Darlington’s Paul Pomfret, with Sylvan Tarn, from Melsonby, in third.
First lady home was Caroline Stanger.
The longer run also marked the “graduation” of Teesdale AC’s latest class of Couch to 5k athletes.
Despite the chilly conditions, organisers said they were pleased with the turn out and all the positive feedback they had received from those taking part.
