YMCA sleep out helps raise cash and awareness of homelessness

GOOD CAUSE: Volunteers who took part

RESIDENTS helped to raise £2,300 with more coming in for YMCA Teesdale after members sleep rough for the night in Barnard Castle.

More than 14 people took part at the event on Friday, March 15, helping to bring in vital funds but also raise awareness of youth homelessness in Teesdale. Participants were sleeping on DIY cardboard beds.

It was part of a national YMCA Sleep Easy Week that saw YMCAs across the country come together over seven days to promote their work with young people.

The money topped the original target of £2,000 and will be used to support YMCA Teesdale’s services for children and young people.

Rachel Dyne, YMCA Teesdale operations director, said: “We’re thrilled about the success and I’d like to thank everyone who took part and spent the night out with us.

“We couldn’t deliver this event without the generosity of those that help make it happen – Orca Cleaning Services for their sponsorship, Spice Island for the curry to warm everyone up and Morrisons for their donation of breakfast and Natwest community banker for his time, the team from Hewitts, and the individuals who took part. Without them, the event wouldn’t be possible.”
