World Book Day – Green Lane School pupils organise their own activities

SPELL ON YOU: Local author Kay Wilson gave talks to all the children at Green Lane School. She is pictured centre with student council member Madie Ainsley and other students and teachers who dressed up for the occasion.

IN a change to normal proceedings, the celebrations for World Book Day were organised by the student council at Green Lane School, in Barnard Castle, this year.

And the children decided to do things a little differently. Instead of focussing on only one particular author, they chose five and organised activities based around each one during the day.

Student council member Madie Ainsley, who came as Annie from the hit musical, said: “We chose five different authors including Julia Donaldson, JK Rowling, Roald Dahl, David Walliams and local author Kay Wilson.

And we were delighted when Ms Wilson agreed to give up her time for free to be part of our day.”

Ms Wilson, who has written and produced ten children’s books, gave talks throughout the day explaining how she began writing and encouraged the pupils to put pen to paper. There were also workshops on creating fantasy characters.

Many of the children donned outfits of their favourite fictional characters, though the option to wear pyjamas was also taken up.
