Visitors to dale beauty spot told to take rubbish home

TAKE IT AWAY: The rubbish-strewn riverside at Gainford

AN appeal has been made for visitors to a dale beauty spot to take their rubbish home after mess was left strewn along the riverside.
The Tees, at Gainford, proved a popular spot at the weekend with large number of vehicles parked at the entrance to the former St Peter’s School site.
The riverside walk is popular with locals who were left dismayed at the large amount of detritus left by those who had driven to the village.
Rubbish included empty laughing gas canisters and alcohol bottles and cans.
Visitors had even abandoned inflatables and rubber rings.
Parish councillor Simon Platten said the state of the riverside was unacceptable and it was only thanks to efforts of one resident that some of the rubbish had been cleared.
“Visitors really need to clear up after themselves,” he said.
The state of the riverside was reported to police.
