Upset over ‘no ball games’ sign at park

SIGN OF TIMES: One of two signs put up at large grassed area

SIGNS banning ball games in a children’s play area have been called “daft” and “disgraceful” by residents.

The signs, which appeared on the fence at the grassed play area at the recently completed Taylor Wimpey Grangefields Estate, in Startforth, say “no ball games” and “no dogs in this area” .

This year tempers flared in the village and meetings to build “community harmony” were held after signs appeared stating the area was for the sole use of Grangefields residents.

These were later removed.

The play area has not been adopted by Durham County Council and as such Grangefield residents still have to pay a fee to Kingston Property Services for upkeep.

One Startforth Park resident said she couldn’t believe more signs had been put up.

“It’s a play area that kids can’t play at. I just can’t believe it I don’t know who’s put them up, but no ball games, that’s just daft.”

Cllr Pat Estall, who is also chairman of the Startforth Park Residents’ Association, said he was looking into the matter.

He added: “We are aware of the signs. Until we can find out who has put them up we can’t really comment.”

Kingston Property Services was unavailable for comment. However, experts say “no ball games” signs are not legally enforceable unless a by-law is created.
