A RECENT recruit to the village’s leek club tasted success in Gainford Horticultural Society’s 62nd annual show.
Phil Goldsborough won trophies for best flower and best veg along with most points in the vegetable classes and most points in the show.
Mr Goldsborough explained how he joined Gainford’s Cross Keys Leek Club after meeting a number of growers who were also members of his home club at Middleton St George.
From there, he was encourage to show in the horticultural society’s show, which was held on Saturday.
The show once again saw a host of top notch entries on show, from the traditional flowers and veg to photos, crafts and cookery.
Les Blades entered his roses in the show for the first time in eight years and took the trophy he first won at the turn of the millennium for best in section.
Sally Roscoe’s cake was the best cookery exhibit while there was double delight for Gillian Hunt, taking part in the show for the first time, took awards for best photo and best in the handicrafts section.
Poppy Heslop took the trophy for most points in children’s cooker, while her cousin Amy accrued most points in the children’s classes.
Show manager Sarah Heslop said that while the number of entries was down on last year – most likely due to the recent mixed weather – the number of people taking part was about the same.
