The benches that are ‘just too uncomfortable’ will have to stay

IN NEED OF CUSHIONS': The benches in Middleton TM pic

UNCOMFORTABLE plastic benches installed by Durham County Council to replace worn-out seats will have to stay as they could be too difficult to bolt down elsewhere.

For the past three months members of Middleton-in-Teesdale and Newbiggin Parish Council have deliberated about how they could resolve the issue of the benches that have been deemed too “uncomfortable” to sit on by residents.

The council had considered swopping them with benches in less popular locations.

However, at their latest meeting, councillors said the benches would have to stay because of the way they are bolted to the ground.

Cllr John Miller said: “I think we should move them. I have sat on them and I agree they are not comfortable at all. But the way they are bolted down is a problem and could be difficult .”

“We need to speak to Durham County Council and see that they revise the design of them for the future as they don’t have to curve.”

Cllr Christine Gilbert said: “It’s a shame.”

Cllr Sue Bainbridge said: “Can we ask Lynne Oxby’s knitters to knit some comfortable cushions for them.”
