TV STAR: Teddy Berriman, from Copley, is part of the cast for a new CBeebies children’s TV series

A DISABLED youngster from Copley is proving to be a star in the making after appearing on a new TV series.

Six-year-old Teddy Berriman is a member of the cast for Kit and Pup – a new children’s TV programme, which is being aired on CBeebies.

Born prematurely at 32 weeks, Teddy spent the first two weeks of his life in intensive care. When he was just two, doctors discovered that Teddy was brain damaged and he was diagnosed with

a neuromuscular disorder called spastic quadriplegia, a disabling form of spastic cerebral palsy.

The condition mainly affects his lower limbs meaning that he can’t walk, stand or sit unaided. He needs round-the-clock care and must use a frame or wheelchair to move around. He also suffers from three different types of epilepsy, autism and is partially sighted.

The Butterknowle Primary School pupil was signed up by Zebedee Management in June last year, a unique modelling agency which specialises in representing people with disabilities.

He was selected to film for series one of the science-based programme last November and then again in April this year for the second series.

Teddy’s mum, Nicola Short, said: “I think it’s a fantastic experience for Teddy. He is so proud. The excitement he expresses when it’s on, naming his friends and shouting with joy when he sees himself, is fantastic.”

Kit and Pup is a fun and playful children’s show which mixes animation and live action to familiarise youngsters with scientific opposites and materials. Ms Short added: “Teddy absolutely loves seeing himself on TV and tells everyone about it.

“It has given him so much confidence and a sense of achievement.”

Teddy’s starring role in the show is just one of a number of appearances that he has made in front of the camera since he was signed up by the modelling agency just over a year ago. In March, Teddy modelled for high street fashion chain River Island as part of their diversity campaign.

Last month, he also became the face of high street giant Marks and Spencer back to school campaign.
