A “FAIRY scone mother” is using her baking skills to raise cash for a scheme that is providing essential items for struggling families.
Shona Robinson, who runs Oliver Twist’s Sandwich Bar, in Barnard Castle, has been doing a massive scone drop every Friday to raise cash for The Hub’s care packages scheme.
The sandwich shop closed on Mother’s Day and while the four staff members have been put on furlough, Ms Robinson works alone to create batches of scones which are then delivered to order.
Mrs Robinson said: “The scones are the same as we do in the shop and cost £2, and of that I am giving £1 to The Hub. In three weeks we have raised £226.
“It is a bit soul destroying being on my own and I miss my customers and my girls. We could have stayed open but because I can’t do it on my own and I don’t want to bring them (staff) into work because they need to be with their families, I decided to close on Mother’s Day.”
However, she keeps in touch with the staff and they have a weekly call up on a Friday.
Two volunteers deliver as many as 90 scones each week as orders continue to increase. For more information or to order a scone, search for Oliver Twist’s Sandwich Bar on Facebook.
