Primary receives top marks in annual survey

TOP MARKS: Head teacher Steve Whelerton and pupils from Staindrop Primary School celebrate being named as top in County Durham and second in the North East in the Parent Power Sunday Times Schools Guide

STAINDROP Primary School has been recognised as the best in County Durham and second best in the North East.
It is the second time the school has featured in the Parent Power Sunday Times Schools Guide, which was published at the weekend.
The top performing schools are ranked according to their average results in Standard Assessment Tests (SATs).
Alastair McCall, editor of Parent Power, said: “We aggregated the scaled scores – where 100 indicates the standard which children are expected to achieve aged 11 – for reading; grammar, punctuation and spelling; and maths in each of the three years and ranked schools on the average aggregated score.”
Staindrop Primary School earned 111.3 points for reading, which was the highest of any school in the North East and its total score of 334.3 earned it second spot overall, only marginally behind St Joseph’s RC Primary School, in Sunderland, which had 335.7.
Staindrop’s result earned it a rank 43rd in the UK.
Staindrop was also the only primary school from County Durham to feature in highest achieving list.
Headteacher Steve Whelerton said the school was thrilled to be in the Sunday times’ top schools list
again.
He added: “We are proud that the hard work of our school community is being celebrated at such an impressive national level.
“It is testament to the commitment of our staff, parents and our amazing pupils who all go above and beyond to make our school so special.
“During another challenging year for schools, we are proud that pupils have continued to flourish in all areas of school life.
“We continue with our ceaseless pursuit of applying creativity throughout our curriculum.
“It is great that we are shining among other schools, but having children who are happy, eager to learn and love school is always our top priority.”
