LOOSE horses have sparked pleas for the authorities to prevent irreparable damage to a Teesdale sports field.
Evenwood’s Randolph Welfare Ground was invaded by a group of horses over the weekend damaging the playing area just days before the start of the cricket season.
Fortunately, the animals stayed away from the cricket square but hoof prints were left in the outfield before they were ushered off the ground on Monday morning.
It is the second time horses have got onto both the cricket and football grounds in the past six months.
Cricket officials have urged the authorities to do something before it happens again.
A club member, who did not wish to be named, believed the horses were the same ones which caused damage to St Mary’s Juniors FC, in Bishop Auckland, and others which have been spotted causing problems on West Auckland’s roads.
“Someone needs to do something about it,” he added. As of Monday afternoon (April 23) neither Durham County Council nor Durham Police had logged the latest horse trespass. However, a police spokesman confirmed a plan for dealing with horses was in the pipeline. Richard Brown, a neighbourhood warden coordinator at
Durham County Council said: “Responsibility for loose horses ultimately lies with their owner. However we are happy to work with the cricket club to see if there any ways we can assist.”
