Parents plan arena for young equestrian star from Ramshaw

SADDLED UP: Mia Grey and Joey prepare for another outdoor training session TM pic

THE parents of a dale teenager are giving their daughter every chance for success as a show jumper – by building her an indoor training arena.

Richard and Kelly Grey have submitted plans to Durham County Council for an indoor arena on land to the west of their farm at Low Garth, just outside Ramshaw.

They hope planners will back their scheme to convert grazing land into single store arena.

The Greys’ daughter, Mia, 13, is a talented junior show jumper.

Having competed at UK level at the Scope and the British Nationals, Mia is chomping at the bit to take the next step.

Mrs Grey said: “Mia has had significant success at Premier Pony events, where she has been competing since she was ten.

“Last year she competed at two international shows, Liverpool and Bolesworth, and this year she has qualified for Hickstead in July” .

Mrs Grey added: “One of the keys for Mia’s future success is consistent training on a daily basis and to do that she needs somewhere local to train. Given the weather in winter, Mia needs access to an indoor facility.

“At the moment we are travelling to the Richmondshire Equestrian Centre in North Yorkshire, 25 miles away.”

Mia started riding when she was just two and competed for the first time aged seven. Having started on ponies she is now riding both ponies and horses at competitive level.

Currently Mia is been trained by Adam Valks, a former show jumper.

This year Mia has two aims – a place at the GB selection event, at Chepstow, this month, and to compete at The Horse of the Year Show, at the NEC, in October.

Mia said: “I am incredibly proud of what I have achieved so far and I am so lucky to have had the opportunity to compete such a high level.”

She added: “I would like to thank my mum and dad and my sponsors, Trailfinder Travel, for all the help and support they have given me.”

Mrs Grey said; “It’s exciting times ahead but we really do need the facilities in order for Mia to progress to the next level.”

A decision on the plans is expected shortly.
