A WHORLTON pensioner has raised £1,800 for the Alzheimer’s Society by walking 100 laps of her village green over four days.
Ann Woodward completed the circuits in response to a challenge set by the family of Capt Sir Tom Moore, who famously walked 100 laps of his garden to raise millions of pounds for the NHS during the Covid-19 crisis, to mark what would have been his 101st birthday this year.
Mrs Woodward chose to support the Alzheimer’s Society because her husband, Mick, suffers from dementia and sent out a flyer to fellow residents to join her in the walk in support of charities of their choice.
Fellow resident and friend Gillian Connolly said: “Friday, April 30, was day one, and Ann set off, quickly joined by her supporters. She walked five times a day, completing five laps each time with a finish date of the Monday.
“The target was achieved despite heavy rain with a total of £1,800 raised for the Alzheimer’s Society – a fantastic effort. The people of the village have been quite generous because of the lack of anywhere to go to spend their money.”
Mrs Woodward attributed people’s kindness to the impact of the disease on families.
She said: “Most people know someone or have a family member who suffers from dementia. I would say I am absolutely overwhelmed by the amount we have raised.”
The septuagenarian added that she asked the Alzheimer’s Society to use the cash to support local projects.
